One of my favorite black Christmas movies is the Best Man Holiday, and clearly I’m not alone. The film was a box office success, grossing $70 million against its $17 million budget. The film is a sequel to The Best Man (1999). The film stars an ensemble cast including Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs, Regina Hall, Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, Harold Perrineau, Monica Calhoun, and Semeka Randall.
The story follows a group of college friends who reunite after 15 years for the Christmas holidays. During their reunion, they discover how much has changed since they last saw each other and how much has stayed the same.The best part about this movie is that it captures the true meaning of friendship and how important it is to cherish those relationships.
Friday After Next [2002]
Talk about hilarious! Friday After Next is one of the funniest black Christmas movies out there. The film stars Ice Cube, Mike Epps, John Witherspoon, Don “D.C.” Curry, Anna Maria Horsford, and Tommy “Tiny” Lister Jr.
The film follows two cousins, Craig and Day-Day, who are trying to make it through another Christmas. This year, they’re working as security guards at a local mall and dealing with all sorts of shenanigans. From getting robbed on Christmas Eve to being chased by an angry Santa Claus, these two have a wild holiday season. Despite the chaos, they manage to learn some valuable lessons along the way. Friday After Next is a must-watch for anyone looking for a good laugh this holiday season.
Holiday Heart [2000]
If you’re in the mood for a heartwarming film, then Holiday Heart is the perfect choice. The movie stars Ving Rhames, Alfre Woodard, and Piper Perabo.
The film follows the story of a drag queen named Holly who takes in a young girl named Ava after she’s abandoned by her mother. Holly becomes a father figure to Ava and does everything he can to make sure she has a happy Christmas. This film is touching, funny, and will definitely get you into the holiday spirit.
This Christmas [2007]
This Christmas is another great black Christmas movie. The film grossed $50 million against its $13 million budget, and it stars an ensemble cast that includes Delroy Lindo, Loretta Devine, Idris Elba, Keith Robinson, Monica Calhoun, Regina King, Chris Brown, and Mekhi Phifer.
The story follows the Whitfield family as they come together for their annual Christmas reunion. However, this year’s reunion is bittersweet as they are dealing with the recent death of their patriarch. Despite the sadness, the family manages to find love and laughter as they reconnect with each other. This film is a great reminder of the importance of family during the holiday season.
The Perfect Holiday [2007]
The Perfect Holiday is a feel-good movie that will definitely get you into the holiday spirit. The film stars Gabrielle Union, Morris Chestnut, Terrence Howard, Queen Latifah, and Charlie Murphy.
Nancy (Gabrielle Union), a single mother of three, is especially lonely over the holidays. Sensing her daughter’s unhappiness, Emily (Khail Bryant), Nancy’s youngest child, has a plan to make her happy again. To make her mother happy again, Emily asks Benjamin (Morris Chestnut), a department-store Santa Claus, to compliment her. Benjamin is also a struggling songwriter and knows exactly what to say in order to make Nancy feel special.
Last Holiday [2006]
Last Holiday is a great black Christmas movie for anyone who loves a good romantic comedy. The film stars Queen Latifah, LL Cool J, Timothy Hutton, Giancarlo Esposito, and Alicia Witt.
The story follows Georgia Byrd (Queen Latifah), a sales clerk at a department store who is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Given only three weeks to live, Georgia decides to take a trip to Europe and live her life to the fullest. While on her trip, she meets a handsome chef named Sean Matthews (LL Cool J) and falls in love. Last Holiday is a heartwarming story about living life to the fullest and enjoying every.
The Wiz [1978]
The Wiz is a classic black Christmas movie that is perfect for the whole family. The film stars Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Mabel King, and Theresa Merritt.
The Wiz is a retelling of L. Frank Baum’s classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In this version, Dorothy is transported to the land of Oz, where she meets a Scarecrow, a Tin Man, and a Lion. Together, they embark on a journey to find the Wiz, who they believe can help them get back to Kansas. The Wiz is a fun and magical film that is sure to put you in the holiday spirit.
A Madea Christmas [2013]
A Madea Christmas is a black Christmas movie that is sure to make you laugh. The film stars Tyler Perry, Tika Sumpter, Chad Michael Murray, Larry the Cable Guy, Kathy Najimy, and Anna Maria Horsford.
The story follows Madea (Tyler Perry) as she’s recruited by a friend to help with her niece’s Christmas pageant. Madea is hesitant at first, but she eventually agrees to help. However, things quickly go downhill when the pageant starts to fall apart. A Madea Christmas is a hilarious film that will definitely get you into the holiday spirit.
The Preacher’s Wife [1996]
The Preacher’s Wife stars Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston, Courtney B. Vance, Gregory Hines, Jenifer Lewis, and Loretta Devine.
Reverend Henry Biggs’ marriage to choir mistress Julia is suffering from his continual presence in the poor neighborhood they live in, as well as owing to his absence caring for the community. On top of all this, Joe Hamilton, a property developer, is putting pressure on his church. Rev. Biggs prays to God for assistance – and God sends an angel named Dudley who helps him out. However, Dudley’s arrival seems to make everything worse…
Holiday Rush [2019]
The story follows radio host Rush Williams (Romany Malco) who is fired from his job just before Christmas. Rush is desperate to provide for his four children, so he must leave their affluent existence and move in with his aunt just before Christmas.
